| Donations for Tornado Victims in Oklahoma |
Harmony Science Academy is teaming up with our local American Red Cross to show our support to those affected by the natural disaster that occurred in Oklahoma on Monday by the way of monetary donations. It is times like these that Americans need to come together and show the kind spirited people that we are. In order to meet the exact needs of those left homeless and without knowing where there next meal is coming from, we are requesting purely monetary donations in order for the Red Cross to in turn purchase what is necessary. We ask that any monetary donations be turned in to your son/daughters homeroom teacher by Wednesday, May 29th.

| Rio Grande Eco-Camp! |
Based on the tremendous success and popularity of last year's "Eco-Camp," RGISC will again host "Eco-Camp!" this summer. Eco-Camp is designed to nurture a young generation of local environmentalists and river caretakers. It is a series of four 1-week camps filled with field trips and nature-centered activities. Our goal is to create a unique, high-quality summer camp where young people can develop a love of nature,as well as a deep appreciation for our river --- the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo --- and greater awareness of environmental issues that are important to our community. We limit each camp session to 12 campers in order to create a more meaningful experience. Eco-Camp sessions run Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will accept Eco-campers on a first come, first serve basis. Our Eco-Camp will enrich campers' learning experience through field trips, science and environmental lessons, and arts and crafts activities. Camp sessions will be staffed by instructors who are committed to science, art, and environmentalism. Campers will leave each session equipped with tools and knowledge to make an environmental difference at home or at their school. We hope that you feel equally excited by this summer youth program, and will join us.

Similarly, encouraging your student to do his or her personal best can greatly improve self-confidence levels leading to better performance. You will also find two documents regarding HSA procedures for cellular telephones/electronic devices and honor statements. Please go over these two documents with your student to communicate their importance and why these measures are being implemented.Thank you for all you do to help your student be as successful as possible, and for all of your contributions to Harmony Science Academy.

HSA Laredo congratulates Senior Blas Vasquez for being accepted to University of Advanced Technology. His hard work and dedication to the school for the past four years has now been rewarded with admission, the first step to a successful future career and life. May the next four years be as much, if not more thrilling, challenging, and fun. It is an honor for HSA to have its Seniors successful and on their way to college and future success. We are excited to hear that you will be moving on to great things after you graduate yet saddened that HSA will be losing such an important person to this school. Good luck and may the force be with you!

Julio Valadez is an all "A" student who enjoys participating in extra-curricular activities and helping out in his community. These activities include basketball, track, National Junior Honors Society and robotics, demonstrating his appreciation for a range of different types of activities. Julio has yet to decide what he wants to be when he grows up but he is interested in medicine and law as possible majors, both extremely respectable careers. | Four Harmony Campuses Made into the Challenge Index |
|
Washington Post has announced its Most Challenging High Schools list of 2012. Four Harmony high schools made the Challenge Index and three of them in the top 100 out of 1900 schools in the list.
The Challenge Index of Washington Post ranks high schools since 1998 based on the student achievement on IB, AP, and college level tests (SAT, ACT, etc.) and graduation rates. The index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies (Subs. lunch) and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E). A (P) next to the school's name denotes a private school.
See the detailed list here.

| Letter to Key Stakeholders Regarding The New York Times Article |
|
From Superintendent Dr. Soner Tarim To the Harmony Public Schools Community: A disappointing article on charter schools in this week's New York Times attempts to put Harmony Public Schools in Texas in a context that is not accurate, necessitating this brief response. Many of us at Harmony Schools cooperated extensively with the Times on this story over the last several months, providing documents, interviews, tours and dozens of detailed responses to specific questions in good faith. But, as sometimes happens, the end result was not entirely what we had hoped.
